State Reps Mayfield, Didech, Morgan and Mason Applaud County Board for Property Tax Deferral

Waukegan – Today, State Representatives Rita Mayfield (Waukegan), Daniel Didech (Buffalo Grove) and Bob Morgan (Deerfield), Joyce Mason (Gurnee) stand in appreciation of the Lake County Board’s decision to approve two measures designed to bring tax relief to property owners who are struggling financially due to the outbreak of covid-19.
The property tax deferral measures approved by the board comprises an ordinance giving Lake County property owners more time to pay each installment of their property taxes due to impacts of COVID-19 and extending the deadline to apply for the Senior Citizens Assessment Freeze Homestead Exemption.

Property tax bills were originally due on June 8th as they are each year. Under the new ordinance, the total tax amount is the same but the payments can be spread out into installments without incurring an interest penalty. The new schedule is 50% of the first installment payment is due by June 8, 2020, 50% of the first installment payment is due by Aug. 7, 2020, 50% of the second installment payment is due by Sept. 8, 2020 and 50% of the second installment payment is due by Nov. 9, 2020.

In April, the four representatives stood together and called on the board to provide property tax relief measures during this time of a major public health crisis and economic uncertainty. Today the Lake County Board took the necessary steps and voted unanimously to bring much needed relief to property owners.

“People in my district are hard working families who have been hit hard financially during this time, said Mayfield. “I am thankful to the Board for passing this measure.”

“With so many of our neighbors struggling economically in the midst of a pandemic, Lake County did the right thing to break tax payments into four installments,” said Didech.

“This is a common sense measure and the Lake County Board carefully considered the needs of working people and acted, “said Morgan. “They are faithfully doing their job.”
