Rep. Mayfield Promotes Relief for Used Car Buyers

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Used car shoppers will be better protected under legislation passed recently by state Rep. Rita Mayfield, D-Waukegan, placing an implied warranty on any used car purchased from a dealer.

“The process of buying a used car is already stressful enough,” said Mayfield. “This legislation relieves some of the pressure of used car shopping by allowing consumers to know that the car they’re buying is in good functioning shape.”

Mayfield sponsored House Bill 3746, which establishes a 15 day or 500 mile implied warranty for any used vehicle sold by a dealership. The implied warranty would allow consumers to have any necessary repairs completed by the dealer or to have the purchase price of the car refunded, if applicable. The initiative is one that brings transparency to the car buying process, warranting the support of the Illinois Attorney General’s Office.

“At the end of the day, it’s about being fair to customers and not allowing dealers to purposely mislead them,” said Mayfield. “I want to be sure that our state’s consumers are protected from fraud and are able to minimize the risks associated with buying a car.”
