Mayfield Encourages Students to Apply for Scholarship Opportunities

Waukegan, IL. – State Rep. Rita Mayfield, D-Waukegan, is encouraging students to apply for scholarships offered by the Conference of Women Legislators (COWL) and the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus.

“Every student should have the opportunity to attend school and pursue higher education, regardless of their income or life circumstances,” said Mayfield. “These scholarships give every student the chance to achieve their goals and succeed in their personal and professional lives.”

COWL, a not-for-profit bipartisan coalition of women legislators in the Illinois General Assembly, sponsors a scholarship for women earning their college degrees later in life. Scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $2,500. Applicants must enroll in an accredited Illinois college or university for a minimum of six credit hours. Full and part-time students are eligible to apply. Applications must be postmarked by April 15, 2015 and awardees will be notified of the decisions by May 30, 2015. Scholarship applications may be downloaded from the COWL website at

The Illinois Legislative Black Caucus Scholarship is available to undergraduate students enrolled in an accredited institution of higher learning, including community colleges, private institutions, and certified vocational training programs. Applications must be postmarked by May 1, 2015 and can be obtained by emailing or contacting Mayfield’s office. Mayfield is the chair of the House Black Caucus.
